How to wash a comforter without damaging it? The complete guide

Comment laver un doudou sans l'abîmer ? Le guide complet

It lies on the floor, gets nibbled, cuddled, dragged everywhere... The comforter is probably the most coveted object in the house. But when it comes time to wash it, many parents hesitate: fear of damaging it, making it lose its scent, or triggering a crying fit. Here is how to do it properly.

How often should you wash the comforter?

There is no strict rule, but washing it every one to two weeks is a good frequency. Also wash it systematically:

  • after an illness (cold, stomach flu, fever)
  • if it fell in a puddle, at the park, or in a public place
  • if it is visibly dirty or smells bad

Step 1: read the label

First of all, take a look at the care label. It indicates the maximum temperature and whether the comforter is machine washable. Some models with electronic elements (music, light) cannot be machine washed, or only after removing the box.

Step 2: machine washing

This is the easiest method for most comforters.

  • Place it in a laundry bag or a closed pillowcase. It will be protected from friction.
  • Choose a delicate cycle at 30°C, or 40°C if the label allows it.
  • Use a mild and hypoallergenic detergent, in small quantities.
  • Avoid fabric softener, which can irritate baby's skin and weigh down the fibers.
  • Light spin cycle so as not to deform the padding.

Step 3: hand washing

For a fragile or very old comforter, hand washing is preferable:

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and a little mild detergent.
  2. Gently press the comforter, without rubbing or twisting.
  3. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  4. Pat it dry in a towel to remove excess water.

Step 4: drying

This is the step where comforters are most often damaged.

  • Air drying is preferable, flat or hung up, in a well-ventilated area.
  • Avoid the radiator, which can harden the fabric.
  • The dryer is only possible if the label allows it, at a low temperature.
  • Once dry, gently fluff the fur with a soft brush to give it back its softness.

The anti-tantrum trick: the spare comforter

The real challenge of washing is often the child who does not want to part with their companion! The solution: have two identical comforters and alternate them. While one dries, the other takes over. By exchanging them regularly, they will keep the same scent and the same wear, and your child won't notice a thing.

And the scent of the comforter?

Many children are very attached to the scent of their comforter. If yours is sensitive, wash it just before bedtime: it will quickly regain its familiar scent by spending the evening in your little one's arms.

When should it be replaced?

A very worn comforter can become dangerous: seams that come apart, stuffing that comes out, eyes or elements that come unstitched. Check it regularly. If pieces are at risk of coming off, it is time to pass the torch to a new companion.
