How does Edward Elric lose his arm?

Edward Elric loses his right arm while attempting human transmutation to bring his deceased mother back to life. Together with his brother Alphonse, he tries to use alchemy to perform this forbidden transmutation, but the process fails catastrophically. As a result, Alphonse loses his entire body, and Edward sacrifices his right arm to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armor, allowing him to remain "alive" in this world.
